Trim Indicator Sending unit

I have a 2004 Alpha One with a 5.0. The trim indicator unit has a broken wire right where the wire goes into the sending unit. Is it possible to solder a new wire on and use shrink sleeve to attach a new piece of wire without replacing the sender and wire through the transom assembly? I couldn't find any videos of such work...

Thanks

It is possible depending on how much wire you have left coming from the sending unit. The question would be would it work and for how long after the repair?
Worth a try maybe, and if it doesn't hold up looks like you're replacing the whole sender assy. Keep in mind when replacing the sending unit you should also replace the trim limit switch as well.

Most sending units get like that from the constant 12 volts on the wires with the ign on. There is a modification to prevent it along with a simple wiring change

Shrink tubing alone will not do it, need to coat with something like Liquid Tape for a water tight seal.

Replacing both trim sender and limit switch is probably the best solution if not enough wire. You could use waterproof butt connectors and shrink tube at the splice, unless you want to run the new wire all the way through the transom; which can be tedious and really requires removal of outdrive and bell housing to get to through the transom plate.

Guys,

Thanks for the ideas, probably will end up splicing a new one on as the wire is severed right at the sender. Unfortunate as my bellows like like they have a couple years left on them.

BT what are the modifications you are speaking of ?

There is a video out there somewhere, where a guy bent a wrench and was able to run new wires for his without removing the drive or housing. (That one nut/bolt way up at the top holding the wires). There are also a few videos on rebuilding the Trim units, they are pretty straight forward on how they work. I believe all they consist of are wires with a connector on them and a screw holding them into place, with a ton of grease/sealer on them.

The mod to stop the constant 12v on the sender wires and sender .
Remove the 12v lead from the trim gauge.
locate the trim harness at the control box and install 2 1A34 diodes in the blue and green wires. diodes are polarity sensitive . you want to be able to pass voltage thru the diode. join the 2 diode ends and connect a wire from the diodes to the 12v side of the trim gauge.
Now the trim gauge and sender wiring only have 12 volts on them when the trim switch is depressed for up or down

Gents,

Thanks for the answers , appreciate the help. Chris like the wrench, it matches of few customized ones in my tool box. BT really neat concept there with the 12 v supply removal makes sense only need to see the trim when trimming...
