I have an 89 force 85hp and my trim works fine up and down...But when I trim up it falls back down slowly..Could this be air in the system or bad valve body? How can I bleed the system.? On another note where can I buy a switch for my trim? I have a switch on my throttle but it sticks..any Ideas?

If Rritt replies that will be the definitive answer. In the mean time, no bleeding. Fill it and if it falls, the valve is bad. Time for a rebuild. Try squirting some silicone at the switch.

an aerosol silicon or silicon grease? Maybe electrical contact cleaner?

Sounds like hydraulic valve body assembly needs a rebuild. Contact RRit, he may be able to exchange yours for a rebuilt one for a reasonable fee. I used his service this season, the refurbrished valve assembly works great.

Aerosal silicone. Won't collect dust and dirt like WD40

air in system can make it bouncy but won't cause bleed down. good system is airtight as well as fluid tight. bleed down almost always valve body but can be bad orings on pistons or rusted bypass valve in tilt cylinder. Put 50 boats in a row that all have bleed down. 49 of them will be valve body.

LOL. There isn't one. I tried to put one together a few years ago. There are so many variations. I was on page six of the instructions and not yet halfway. The bag of parts cost too much because it had to cover every possible variation. No matter what revision you had, there were parts left over. And, even if I did finish the instructions I knew that I would end up spending hours on phone. And even if i didn't mind wasting tons of my time then maybe only half the people would get it right. So i quit trying. It was a wasted effort that could only lead to bad places. I think Force only sold replacement pump assemblies (but not parts) for pretty much the same reason.

hey RRitt i think i have read everything you have written on here and im amazed to say the least!!!!! ok so here is another goofy question....i had a motor home that had hyraulic cylinders for lifting jacks... the goofy thing was they ( Holloway) built them with, i wanna say Johnson outboard trim pumps.... they have the Presotlite valve body that has a plastic spacer that is about 2 -2 1/2 in wide ... anyway is a trim pump a trim pump or do some have WAY to much pressure to be used on a 85 Force? i have 4 of these and am gonna use the cylinders for something else but i dont want to get ride of these pumps... oh yea... almost forgot they only have 2 lines coming out...

Re: Trim Leak Down/ How to bleed?

The spacer is so that reservoir holds more fluid. It has a matching armature with longer shaft. Mercury used same setup on some early sterndrive. If you can bend tubing to make the ports work for you then the pump is fine. A few of the parts are actually interchangeable with Johnson/Evinrude/Chrysler/Force.

If you can get the tubing to connect without stripping any threads then the pumps should work fine.

Hi RRitt, I have the same issue but I have a 125 and can find some parts on some sites but not knowing which part to get. You stated a valve body but which one is that in the pic below.

The valve body is the round thing on bottom of reservoir and held in place with four phillips screws. There is no separate part number internal or external. As the pump evolved with time it underwent continual revisions to match electric motor. Sometime around 1988 it became easier to just sell the assembly than to keep track of a gazillion tiny revisions.

If your motor is the same as the one in picture (2w prestolite) then put new seals on it at the same time as rebuilding valve body. The motor will last forever if you keep water out and the motor seals usually begin breaking down about same time as valve body. Do it now and save $200 off buying new motor and save 4hours of time to pull pump off boat again. It just doesn't make sense not to put new seals on.
