Re: trim limit switch not working!

okay did lots of searching on here and found out that the throttle control i have a is a commander panel mount..and it appears that the little circuit board thats supposed to be with the trailer button is gone and someone soldered the brown wire directly to the trim button disabling the trailer button...so question is ..with the trailer button bypassed inside the throttle would that cause the trim limit switch to not work? here is the link to my throttle

Did you adjust your new trim limit switch after it was installed?

Re: trim limit switch not working!

yes followed the directions to the letter starting at 13 "reinstall trim limit switch with drive in full down position i aligned the index marks on the new limit switch, installed switch, installed wire clip on water hose, turned switch all the way clockwise to end of slots, drive is still in full down position, now it says trim drive up do not use trailer switch (i didnt plus mine doesnt work) slowly turn trim limit switch counter clockwise untill trim cylinders extend to dimensions listed below 20 3/4 inches" thats the instructions....now when i turn the limit switch counter clockwise the drive does not lower (remember it said to trim the drive up) before adjusting switch. So with drive all the way up why does the instructions say the cylinders should "extend to dimensions below" if the drive is already all the way up?

Re: trim limit switch not working!

now it says trim drive up do not use trailer switch (i didnt plus mine doesnt work)

If your trailer switch doesn't work, and if you did have the trim limit working, how did you plan on getting the drive all the way up to trailer position.

Re: trim limit switch not working!

the trim senders were shot... wires broken.... thats why i replaced them was.... not aware the trailer button didnt work untill trying it last night and taking throttle cover off to see no cicruit board to trailer switch...i am planning on fixing trailer button as well.....but now that you mention it...if the trialer button doesnt work i could always bypass it at the trim pump but i would also like to get the limit switch working as well.....right now using the trim button i can raise the drive all the way

Re: trim limit switch not working!

There is no circuit board. In the control, you have 2 switches, the trim switch for up and down trim, and the trailer UP button. Not counting the neutral safety switch which has two yellow/red wires
You should have 4 wires coming out of the control. Purple/White, Blue/white, Green/white and red/purple.
Trailer up = Blue/white
Trim up through the trim limit switch = Blue/white
Trim/tilt down = Green/white.
Power for trim/trailer = Red/purple.

Is that what you have?

i have 4 wires going in which are purple, green, red, blue and coming out of the little black connector i have green/white,purple/white and brown white...you can see where someone soldered the brown wire it was covered in electrical tape last night before i removed it to see what was going on.. here is a link to a picture of it i do not know how to put pics in a post yet...thank you for helping me don...and also here is a pic of whats inside the trailer button..and here is a pic of the wiring inside the connector gut feeling says the colored wires should match up with coresponding colored wires??

Your wiring is all messed up. Here is how it should be wired. Why you have 2 green wires, I don't know, but would bet one of them is actually blue and is faded. You may have to check the wiring from the back of the boat all the way to your switches for continuity on each wire to see what it actually goes to.

Yes, still available from either your local Mercruiser dealer, or type in part number 18286T33 in HERE

NOTE: That is for both the trim/tilt switch and the trailer switch item 22.

before you do anything, something doesn't make sence here. the step that says "trim drive up" is confusing and by rereading your post a few times i think you might have the switch adjusted wrong. with the drive all the way down, install new switch and turn all the way clockwise. then have someone hold in the up trim button (i did mine alone using a small c clamp). if the switch is all the way clockwise, the drive will not start moving yet when your buddy presses the up button. now slowly turn the switch counterclockwise and the drive starts to raise. stop turning the switch when you get to 20 3/4" and lock it down. all the while your buddy still has his finger on the up button but your controlling the movement by rotating the switch. now your switch is adjusted. the step 3 that says "trim drive unit up/out. do not use trailer switch " should say "press drive up/out button not trailer button and hold"

Re: trim limit switch not working!

well i got the trim and tilt working properly now...trim gauge reads good and trailer button now works as does the limit switch. A big thanks to don s...got the new trim and tilt switch but was unable to use the new rocker switch so i simply soldered in the trailer switch and connected the wiring correctly and traced the wiring to the back to insure the PO did not switch any more wires around he didnt.BINGO... everything works as it should...set the limit to 20 3/4....hope to take the boat out tommorow.......

Re: trim limit switch not working!

Hoverman, I too am afflicted with that anal-retentive-everything-must-work-the-way-it-was-designed disease, and I have the exact same problem that you have. Trim limit switch doesn't work even when disconnected, and the trailer switch doesn't work either. My guess is that when the original trim limit switch crapped out, the previous owner grabbed some hay baling wire and duct tape and did the same to mine. Why they wouldn't just jumper across the limit switch rather than screw up the wiring in the console I don't know.

Also, took me a while to figure out how to attach pictures.

First, google "EZ Thumbnails" and download this software. You'll need to make the pictures smaller. It's easy to use. The file size limits are listed in "manage file attachments" explained below.

When you're posting, go down to "manage file attachments" and browse for your reduced picture and upload it. Then close out of that and hit "post."

It's really very easy.
