I have the power head and mid removed from the swivel bracket as I am changing them out. Anyway I had to lower the bracket as it was in the up position so I direct wired the trim motor. The motor ran for a few seconds and the bracket started to come down then it quit. I wait a few seconds, put power back to it and it will run for a bit then quit. Wires going into the motor look good, is the motor just on its last legs? If I do need a new trim motor do you have to seperate the swivel bracket from the transom? Sure seems like it would be hard to get that third bolt behind the motor out?

Re: trim motor issue

You might tell us what year and HP motor you are working on. PTT assemblies change over the years and HP.

Re: trim motor issue

Motor is a 1996 Johnson 88. Figured out how to get trim assembly out, what a pain! Driving the pin out from the center ram was fun! Anyway off to get new trim motor and put it back together. On Ebay I see alot of aftermarket trim motors for under $100, some as low as $52. My local parts guy has one for $120 and it still is an aftermarket. Their all probably made in China, anyone try one of the cheapos?

I replaced my Merc V6 PTT motor with an aftermarket ARCO unit for about $100. It has been working fine....

Two, actually. If you ebay 'omc trim motor' just about everything listed is from a seller named dbelectrical. I bought one of their starters and have had it in for 2 years without issue and a trim motor for my J140 which I returned when it turned out I didn't need it (hydraulics), then it really went out so I bought another from him and that's been in for about a year and works better than the factory trim motor did before it started to go out. I suppose it could have been on its way out since the day I bought the J140, but either way I'm quite happy with it.
