How hard is it to replace the trim motor on a Johnson 140 hp V4? Is it as easy as unbolting the old motor and install the new motor? Or does the job get ugly with the hydraulic fluid? Thanks.

Not sure of the year yet. '80's maybe?? When did they come out with VRO?

Motor is round with a square mounting flange. I can see 3 bolts....there may be a bolt on the front left corner.... can't see it but if it's there, it's a pain to get to.

Re: trim motor replacement

if it is a 4 bolt trim motor, rent a Cherry Picker (engine hoist). connect to engine, and slightly relief weight, remove nuts hold engine, and lift engine from boat, then slide back slightly. that is the way we do it in my shop.

Re: trim motor replacement

Tashasdaddy, Thanks for the tip. I have an engine crane and will do as you say. Is there no hydraulics to deal with? The motor shaft is just spline or tang drive or something like that? No hydraulic oil under the motor? Thanks.
