Trim motor / switch

On a previous post I thought I had a bad connection on the wiring going into the trim pump in the engine compartment of my 1999 crowline 5 liter Alpha 1. I cleaned the leads and reattached them and the intermittent clicking still occured when I pressed the trim adjustment button on the throttle to lower the prop / drive unit. The same button is used to raise the unit by pressing up. I found that when I pressed the button down but at angle to the front of the boat the unit will lower just fine with no clicking. The unit will raise up with no problems. The throttle assembly is a "Quicksilver Classic 3000". Is the switch itself in the handle of the throttle faulty? Can anyone refer me to a Mercury service bulletin about this? Thanks for any comments or suggestions.

Re: Trim motor / switch

I have personally had the wirng inside the handle come loose from the switch on a 3000. This might explain it working when pressed "at angle" if I am reading you correctly. These are not hard to take apart, but I had the manual for the control when I first did it . . .

jmark - if you're getting a click at the trim motor, your switch is working. When the solenoid works properly, it still clicks, but you don't hear it because the motor starts. I think that pressing the switch forward & having the solenoid fire was just a wild coincidence, since you say it works sometimes other than when you press it forward. If you cleaned up all the connections at the solenoid & still have the problem, I'd look at replacing the solenoid.

Do you have a copy of the wiring diagram? If so check out wire colors and jump accordingly.

As a top quality redneck mechanic here is my guess:

Unplug hanress at trim motor. Check for 12 Volts at the red/purple wiring coming off pump. If you have 12 Volts then jump the red/purple to the green white and the motor should run. If it does problem is in the switch.

Good luck. If you do a search on topic you will find links to diagrams.

Isn't that just bypassing the solenoid? If so, that won't tell you if the switch is bad, only if the solenoid is bad, right?

Re: Trim motor / switch

I don't think so. It is just doing what a switch normally does manually simply to check the switch. The Green/white that is getting connected via a jumper goes to the smaller terminal on the solenoid then there is another, larger green white that goes to the motor.

If I am reading the wiring diagram corrcectly my test is going through the soleniod as the wire that goes to the control is on the small terminal and the wire that goes to the pump is on the large terminal.

To bypass the soleniod you would have to put 12 volts directly to the terminal that goes to the motor, and I don't suggest this.

I just finished working on mine and found lots of great info via the search tool. There are links to the manuals which have the diagram and trouble shooting procedures.

I see said the blind squirrel. There are 2 green/white wires & I thought you meant the OTHER one. Test on.
