trim motor woes

I just bought a '79 rienell 170 with volvo penta 120b/270d outdrive and it seems the trim motor refuses to bring the outdrive down, it works fine to pull it up, but nothing happens when the "down" lever is pushed.
I manually pushed the motor down into place (against hydraulic pressure) and was able to run the boat this way for our first day, has anyone ever experienced this?
is this common when trim motor controls fail to perform the "up" but not "down" operation?

Re: trim motor woes

Does the motor work when you hit the trim button? Do you hear it spinning? Maybe the switch is bad and the motor is fine.

Re: trim motor woes

as it happens, I switched the wire to the power lift (it seems this boat doesnt have "power trim" , sorry, new to boating), and now the same switch lowers but doesnt raise the outdrive, I suspect the culprit may be the three way "return to nuetral) switch itself, I will replace it and report back, thanks for the response
