Trim Motor won't turn off

I was out on the water yesterday and as soon as I killed my engine I heard my trim motor winding. I click the button a couple times and it stopped. I quickly move to restart my battery and it
struggles to find the power.

Ones I reach the marina, it kicks on again, and won't turn off. I can't turn it off, so I quickly disconnect my battery. I recharged my battery, and I'm able to lift the engine back up without any problems.

This morning, I attempt to lower the unit, but its not able to. I can lift the engine, but not lower it. I bought a new "lower" solenoid and install it (I assume it's correctly installed, it was a little different from what I removed).

As I reconnect the battery, the motor kicks on and the motor begins to lower on it's own.

Does it sound like an electrical problem near the pump, or is it my trim control on my throttle that needs attention?

Since you have already changed your solenoid I would see about checking the trim switch and its wiring. Do you have more than one switch either at the motor or installed in the front of the boat? If so does it happen if you disconnect the switch on the throttle?

Re: Trim Motor won't turn off

This problem came totally without warning. I was out on the bay, testing out my fuel system (see yet another thread) and it happened.

I assumed I burnt out the solenoid.
The only switches controling tilt I'm aware of are on my throttle control.

In case I used inappropriate language, I'm only discussion the ability to tilt my outboard. I do not have trim tabs or anything of the like.

Re: Trim Motor won't turn off

There is only a couple ways for the trim motor to be activated if it is not internally shorted, yours does not sound like that.

When you activate the trim/tilt switch. or if there is a short in the wires that go to the trim switch allowing the power to short to the lower position wire on the switch.

I would check out the wire harness looking for broken insulation and also check the trim switch as it may not be relaesing due to burnt contacts. besure and check the wires on the motor also.

I myself think your switch is bad.

Make sure the wiring for the new solinoid is compatable.

The solenoid I purchased matches the upper one, but was different from what I replaced. As a result, it doesn't quite fit. Using the existing mounting holes, the two solenoids are too close together.

Everything is working nicely now.

The wires in the control box had rubbed the insultation raw. When I'd shift the motor into gear, the raw wires would short out and kick the tilt on. Problem was solved by replacing the wires in the control box.
