1994 Mercury 135. Replaced trim motor last year. Worked great until a few weeks ago. When you try to trim up or down there is a clicking noise (relays working) but motor won't move. One light tap on the trim motor using a wrench and it works fine. Any suggestions other than always carring a wrench when boating.

Re: Trim motor

Remove trim motor, clean and reseal. Tapping with wrench will only break the magnets.

Re: Trim motor

Hi,
Trying to find any post of Trim Motor removal, I found this one.
I´ve facing the same problem. I need to tap the trim motor when boating.
In case of my boat, I have a 28´Phoenix with twin 2.5L 200HP in water with antifouling...so is very difficult to pick up the boat from water.(I´ll must to pay Marina, new antifouling, labor, etc, etc)
There is any other way to remove the trim motor in water or just to remove the trim motor upper section where the brushes are located in order to clean the brushes or replace brushes only?

Re: Trim motor

tapping the motor usually indicates worn brushes. But to eat through brushes in a year is a bit much.

Re: Trim motor

Thanks Merc for your reply but I bought this used boat, so I don´t know the working lifetime...Thinking about repair this little trim motor, I think that Mercury Engineering side did not take care easier way for maintenance of this motor.
Removal of this motor for me is very expensive, as I explained before with boat in water...
During this next weekend, I´ll try to remove the upper section or cover brush plate for cleaning purpose. If any idea for better way to work , please let me know.
Thanks
Carlos
Venezuela

Re: Trim motor

Sirs,
I forgot to ask:

I´ve the Merc (Mariner)Shop Manual for 200HP engines. (1976-1989). My question is:
1-My engine is a 2.5L carb. 1994: so the trim motor is similar to 1989? (design I)
2- In this Shop Manual, does not show how to remove the motor in pictures: anyones of you have any picture for trim motor removal?

Thanks for your attention.

Carlos
