Trim Motor

I have a 94 Mercruiser 350 Mag with an Alpha 1 lower unit and this weekend I noticed that my trim motor would not trim up, no clicking. Down is fine and Trailer (up all the way) is fine which is how I managed to get the trim to partially function. When I got back to the dock I tried to bypass the trim switch by jumping the trim harness and up would still not work, so the problem does not appear to be the trim switch. All of the wires on the trim motor appear to be in good shape so I do not think that it is a loose connection. It appears that my boat manufacturer started using the new Commander 3000 throttle/ trim set up in my boat and my Seloc manual only has the old set up so the manual was of no use in diagnosing the problem. The trim motor has SAE J1171 stamped on it and it I believe that up solenoid may be toasted but I wanted to see if anybody else ever had the same<br />problem.

Re: Trim Motor

Trim and trailer solenoid is the same one.Sounds like a bad sw. in the control box.

Re: Trim Motor

JCasey, There is a switch on the outdrive which when closed, allows the motor to trim up. When this switch is open, only the trailer function will work. Opening and closing of the switch is caused by the trim angle of the outdrive. These rot out all the time, since they are under water all the time. The cure is to replace it or bypass it. The switch is located on the bell housing of the outdrive, and it covers the tilt pivot point. It has two ss screws holding it on the bell housing. On the opposite side is the trim guage indicator sendor. I do not remember which side holds which. If you want to bypass the switch, the pump wiring harness has bullet connectors, near the pump, where the switch leads are connected. Disconnect the leads and install a short jumber cable.

Re: Trim Motor

I checked out the trim switch this weekend and I noticed that one of the wires was damaged. Thank you for steering me in the right direction.
