trim motors revisited (help)

I have some dum-dum things being a new boater-boat owner. The engine is a Merc 1150, 1979. My power trim system was dead, The seloc manual calls my unit a system "A" (a 2 cylinder system) The trim motor does run with all 3 buttons. (no oil in the system) So... The book doesn't say a few things like basic instructions.
First Question - What is this reverse lock operation knob? and why would I use it? (a complete use would be awesome)
Second. The book says use the center button and the top one to raise the engine into the traillerable position. (up/out and up) The book does not say to use both or just the bottom button to lower it from that position? What is the correct way? I assume the down only button ? but I had better ask.
Third one - If I manually lower the engine before I finnish bleeding the system am I doing anything wrong? I thought I was full enough to start cycling the system to get the air out of the lines and there is alot less resistance ?
I assume just to continue filling the system and moving things either manually or using the motor or both
Last. In bleeding I close the fill screw and leave the air screw loose until I am full - then close the air screw down all of the way - fight? or do I have something wrong.... Wish me luck.... Lots of answers would be cool,
Dave

Re: trim motors revisited (help)

Dave, The bottom button trims and tilts down. The middle button trims up, however, that function is based on the trim limit switch working properly, which is rarely the case. Plan on using middle and top buttons to trim and tilt the motor up.

The stainless steel slotted screw on the pump/resevoir is the fill port. Use 5W-30 motor oil to top off, unless the PO filled it with ATF, then use ATF.

The reverse lock knob is really a manual tilt release know, located under the resevoir, on the control valve. Turning it CW engages manual override.

You must remove the trim cylinders from the motor to bleed them. There are two bleed screws on each cylinder. They are SS slotted screws. One is on top of each cylinder, next to the zerc. The other is next to where the hydraulic line attach. These must be removed, and the ports faced up, and the motor run to bleed them.

Re: trim motors revisited (help)

Thank you Chris, I lost the top button somewhere along the line, I'm going to assume that there is a stuck Valve. ( I'm reading everything I see here as well) Once I get the cylinders bled I will see what is going on. This is a part time project for me. I am hoping to go for a spin Saturday morning so I will not have it by then. The good news is that I'm still under 1350$ on the whole thing...... Whew...
