Trim n Tilt Trouble

My trim and tilt hadnt been working, the PT/T motor was running but no action. i figured it needed fluid. So i put something in it... I just realiazed thinking about it right now, that i put gear lube in it instead of the brake fluid i bought at the store specifically for this. So i filled it up with the gear lube and it began to function again but then sprang a leak from the top of the cylinder where the piston/ram comes in/goes out. Could the gear lube have done this or did it just have a bad seal from the get go. The motor's a VJ50TLETB and i bought it non-functioning so i've actually never used the trim/tilt till now, or the motor for that matter. I plan on flushing the system tomorrow, but is rebuilding that cylinder a common procedure, or is the unit replaced more often than not. I'm thinking im going to shop it once i can mount it on my toon, it needs a link n synch too, new prop and new timer base. But is DOT3 brake fluid acceptable for PT/T, or is there a heavier hydrolic fluid that suits it better. And does anyone know what an acceptable shop bill would be for a link n synch, and whatever trim/tilt option is the least expensive fix (buying a new vs rebuild).

Fist of all those units use Dextron III Auto trans fluid. I think brake fluid would ruin the unit. Remove the unit from the motor and dump out the gear lube.

BTW - I do not think the gear lube would ruin the seal. I thik it would make the PTT unit not operate, or operate slowly. You need to replace the oring in the trim rod seal.

Re: Trim n Tilt Trouble

As stated, do not use gearcase oil or brake fluid, I would stick to BRP's TNT fluid, or as a second option, ATF Dextron III as Chris stated. I would get yourself an OEM service manual, as the Clymers or Seloc will not give you enough detail to rebuild that TNT unit. In reference to the problem of the unit not working, if the motor is running, but the hydraulics are not functioning, I would first ensure that the oil is topped off, and the system is bled. After that, ensure that the manual release is closed and tight, and there are no leaks present at the o ring. There may also be an internal blockage.

BTW - The OMC Service Manual for the motor may not contain any reference to the PTT units. On my '98 Johnny 150, the PTT service instructions are in the OMC Accessories service manual.
