Have a newly acquired craft ('99 model} with a volvo 5.o gl w/ sx outdrive. It came w/o a thermostat and would like some info on what operating temps I should be looking for when acquireing one. Also the trim/tilt indication isn't working. Wondering if there information out there about trim postion sensor location and repairability.

Re: Trim position indicator and thermostat

The thermostat you need is Volvo PN 3856961, it's a 160° thermostat made out of marine materials for use with raw water cooling.

The trim senders aren't repairable, so you just have to replace them. The pn for it is. 3863007.
It's located on starboard side of the gimbal ring.
A service manual is the best place to find information for repairs on your engine and drive.
You can order them from Volvo also, or get a Seloc for doing minor repairs. Avoid the Clymers manuals completely.

okay cap... lets be blunt and ask what exactly is the difference tween a marine stat and an auto stat.. i dont need one but i would be interested to know..

marine engines run cooler than auto engines so there might not be an auto equivalent in some cases.. some have to contend with salt water but not all.. purely a hypothetical question this one.. but one worth asking..

if i knew the answer i would give it.. but being as i dont i am also asking the question..

trog100
