Can anyone tell me the proper way to use the trim on an outboard. Should you trim it down as quick as possible or does it depend on speed ?

Re: Trim Procedures

Howdy, U.

Usual procedure is to use zero trim at displacement speeds.

To get up on plane, start with the engine trimmed in (down) to lift the stern, then as she comes up "out of the hole", trim her out (up) to the edge of porpoising or prop ventilation.

Good luck. :)

trim in for the holeshot, once the boat is planing trimout to get the best running angle. If you go too far the boat will porpoise. Also trim in to keep the bow down into a sea & trim out to keep the bow up in a following sea.Hope this helps :)

Re: Trim Procedures

When running the boat start with the trim all the way down once up on plane start to to trim up. you will know after time of using how far is trimmed up to far, by sound and feel. If trimmed up to high you will loose power or cavitate. Be shure not to trim the motor completely out of the water could cause damage.
Nickster

Re: Trim Procedures

Thanx for all the help, this is truly a great site. My boat will only allow me to trim up to a certain angle while in gear 1989 bayliner force 125 outboard. :D
