I have a 1969 mercruiser 250 Cu in. (160 HP)I/O

My trim works to lower the motor, and it works to raise the motor if I push the up and the up/out (or whatever the middle button is called) buttons at the same time (trailering position).

But it doesn't raise up at all if I just press the up button. Shouldn't the up button by itself raise the sterndrive part way? What could be the problem?

I'd appreciate any help.. George

Re: Trim question.

The wires to the trim limit switch are bad.....
Proabaly where they come through the transom assembley....
That's why you need to over-ride it with the trailer button...

Re: Trim question.

You know.. sometimes just asking the question helps you answer it.. After I typed that it dawned on me that the limit switch circuit must have the problem. I was going to check the switch itself.. However I'll also take a look at the wiring in the transom area as you suggested... Thanks for the help!!! ... George

Re: Trim question.

I had the same problem. The wires to the limit swtich were frayed, and the wier insulation was non-existant. After reading the "how to" on replacing the limit switch, I simply ran a jumper wire eliminating the switch. Mine is a 1975 Mercruiser 888, with the limit switch on top of the Gimbal ring. Of course, after that I had to rebuild the pump motor. At least I got it to run last night. Hopefully back on the boat today. Everyday is a learning experience with an old boat.
