Trim sender adjustment

Ok I've read the procedure as per Don S . But I must be doing something wrong. Do I connect 1 end of my meter to the wiring on the boat and other to 1 wire on my sender to ohm it out ? And do I need my key on to do this ? Or perhaps someone who has done this please advise . Thank you

2 Wire sender, Ohms scale on meter, one probe to each wire.
3 Wire just ignore the middle wire.

I have a 2 wire. So I just connect to each wire off the sender to ohm it out ? Thanks
