The wires on each side of my outdrive (mercruiser) going to the trim limit switch and the trim position sensor are damaged. i need to know how to replace them.
The outdrive goes up and down but under power the trim doesn't seem to work.
First I probably need to figure out which mercruiser outdrive I have. It is on a 1983 Chris Craft 210 Scorpion. The engine is 350 V-8 260 hp. I dont see anything on the outdrive that tells me which one it is. i assume it is original. It looks like it is.

Re: trim sender and trim limit switch wiring damaged

Still have this problem if anybody can help. The outdrive trims all the way up and down but only in slow trim mode but never in tilt mode. I cant see how to get the covers off the units on each side of the outdrive and I dont want to damage them. Do they have rubber seals or a gasket of some kind?
I am trying to do all the work on this boat myself without having to take it to the shop.
Any help would be appreciated.

It is a HUGE PITA! Best done off season. Pull drive, bellhousing, bellows and then try to get to the bolts holding the wires.

For the wires, I would try to repair them with solder connections if broken, and cover any bare spots with a few layers of liquid tape for a start.

You probably have the old style wire wound trim sensor (starboard). It may just be corroded. You could try disassembling and cleaning it up. Might work.

For the trim limit (port), locate the purple/white wire connector and the connector with two blue/white wires. There should be two black wires from the tl switch plugged into them. Unplug and with a wire jumper between the connectors. Try up trim. If works your switch on the control is OK and the tl switch is the problem. The tl switch just a copper strip and a movable contact arm, so you can try taking the cover off (4 screws) and cleaning it up. Plug it back into the connectors (polarity doesn't matter) and see if it works. If not, you can leave the jumper in and just be careful that you don't trim it up too high when running fast. Good luck.

You really need to grab a copy of the shop manual for it if you are going to do this work. (Look in the Adults sticky in this forum.)
Sorry guys, But just so that you guys are aware, the Mercruiser Service Manual Links to the free service manuals are no longer available.;)
