Trim Sender or No Trim Sender

Hey all. I have a 2012 Merc EFI Four Stroke. I bought a trim gauge for my boat and went to install I today. I failed to verify that the engine already had a trim sender wired from the engine to the console. I know I'm meant to be looking for a brown wire with a white stripe. There is no such wire coming from the engine.

So, I popped the engine cowl and found a brown wire with a white stripe in the engine with a cap on it. I connected the gauge and connected that to the sending wire contact on the gauge. Nothing.

I know I bought the gauge made for a Merc. I'm at a bit of a loss. Is anyone familiar with this engine? Does anyone happen to know if this engine is capable of sending trim info?

You forgot to let us know what engine model (horsepower) you have?

Normally the engine may not come with a trim sending unit installed. Some engine models may send the trim sender in the owner's manual packet while other models may not.

We'll need your engine serial number to verify the correct sending part number from Mercury.

The sending unit is typically installed on upper trim ram pivot pin starboard side.

That was quite the oversight on my part. Oops! Thanks for catching that. It's a 40 hp serial number 1C159398. Unfortunately I did not get the owners manual. I bought it through a consignment place and the original owners were less than helpful. Please let me know what other info I can provide that may help.
