trim sender problem

I just bought a new trim sender for my 2001 90hp Johnson ocean pro and tried it out by hooking it up to the ignition wire and ground on the harness under the dash. I then hooked it up to the trim sender wire right in the sender and it worked like a charm. Then I installed on the back and ran the wires into the motor and hooked them up. After hooking everything back up from under the dash, I had the same problem as with the old trim sender (it was frozen up and did nothing) it showed down no matter what. To make a long story short I checked all wires and they were fine so I pulled the sender out again and tried it as before and the sender still will not show anything but down. I have checked the gauge by touching the ground and signal terminal terminals at the same time and gauge goes to up. It is like it quit working as soon as I installed it. I know the trim gauge is the most useless gauge on the boat but I want it to work. Does anyone know any way to test the trim gauge itself? Any help will be appreciated. D

Re: trim sender problem

An ohm meter should show variable resistance.
Pop the old sender apart , I think you can buy the variable pot at ratshack.

Re: trim sender problem

Thanks Jonesg. I appreciate the answer. One thing though how does it come apart. It seems to be made as one piece with some type of filler put into it from one side. I guess i could cut around the outer edge with a dremel tool. Anyone have any answers? Thanks, D
