I'm looking at replacing my trim sender & switch.
The sender wires are rotted all the way through.

I'm not sure about the condition of the bellows. If they are in good shape, I'd rather not have to replace them this year.

The service manual describes the basic procedure for replacing the switch and sender, but it doesn't go into detail about the wire.

There is a lengthy description on sterndrives.com about replacing them, but I don't really understand why it should be so difficult.

It seems that I should be able to use the old wires to pull the new ones through the outdrive and transom. Is this possible?

PreAlpha is vague, but the harness should have 2 half moons molded on it. In most cases you need to remove the boots to get to the bolts

It's a 1976 MR-233 (Ford 351).
I didn't see anything in the service manual about removing bolts. I might try to go look closer at the the switch/sender and maybe see if I can remove the sender.

2 types. 1 goes on each side of the steering ring (TS,TL). the early one is under the top of the steering arm.
