Trim sending unit troubles

I'm fairly certain my trim sending unit is shot on my 85 'Rude 90hp. Yesterday I hooked up my gauges (tach, volt and trim). When I checked the trim gauge, the needle was showing it was "Up" when the motor was actually trimmed down. If I trimmed the motor up, the gauge would show "Down". Thought I new what the problem was (crossed wires from the sending unit) and fixed it but it still does the same thing. I raised the motor and started messing with the sending unit. I can wiggle the "arm" from the sending unit and the needle on the gauge jumps all over the place.

I guess my first question is, are trim gauges motor specific? I bought a set of 3 Faria gauges (tach, volt and trim) off eBay for $40. Could I have the wrong trim gauge for this motor? Or is the sending unit the culprit?

Re: Trim sending unit troubles

Could be the wrong sender (Incompatable) or the sender is bad if the reading is jumping around. Below are some tests you can run. My guess is that the sender is wrong for the gauge or visa-versa...
