Hi, my boat (3.0l mercruiser year 2001), had an issue with the slave solenoid a couple of months ago, so I replaced the solenoid with another which I had in my shed. Now the starting problem is back, clicking solenoid, starter only engages intermittently but always OK if I short the two secondary terminals on the solenoid (the large terminals).

The replacement solenoid was actually from the trim motor and was nearly 20 years old. Is it the same as the starter motor slave solenoid (looks the same on the outside), or should I buy a new solenoid and have done with it? There are some for sale on eBay, but are described as trim solenoids, so dont want to buy the wrong one.

On my '96 4.3 the trim and starter slave solenoids are the same p/n. So I suspect yours are too.
