Trim switch replacement in Commander control.

Trim switch fell apart in the handle, out on the lake.

I pulled the control off the gunwale and flipped it over to get the model number. All I found were sticky spots where the labels used to be.

Are we having fun yet?

Could someone tell me the model number of this comander control. It's on a 1988 boat with a 1988 XR4 engine. Trim switch is (was) a rocker switch. Throttle friction knob on the front, Temp gauge wire hanging out of the harness. Toggle type kill switch built in.

Could use some tutoring on getting to and replacing the trim switch also.

Thanks in advance
John

Re: Trim switch replacement in Commander control.

I just replaced my trim switch as well. This is a commander 2000 (quicksilver) remote control, very common. To replace switch is qiute easy, just pull the 3 screw holding UPPER back cover on,then you will have to remove nut visible on the back which holds on the lever. After doing this there are a couple screws holding the red spring loaded shift interlock lever.I think you will figure the rest out.FYI dougrussellmarine.com has a blowup parts list for this control and any parts needed.

My trim switch is shot also. "dougrussellmarine.com" is a garbage website - I tried it w/ www in front also. Could you double check the address? I need a replacement.... couldn't find it at the iboats store.

There's a few different versions of it. There should be a model and serial number sticker on the bottom of the control. Mine was missing. They are also different in appearance. A photo here would elicit a guess as to which one it is. It would help to know what engine it's hooked to, and if it has a kill switch and where it is.

If you know the model number, your local mercury shop can order the switch for you, or you can go to crowley marines website, and page /mercury_parts/2436.cfm to look up the part number.

hope it helps

Thanks for the link - I assumed my switch was shot since the prev. owner spliced into the harness and added a new switch.

Looks like a wire was bad, so I swapped wires at the OEM switch in the handle and at the pump, and it works great now.

I knew my switch was bad because it fell out into my hand.

Looking at the guts thus exposed, I think that's about what it'd take to kill this swich. It's built like the proverbialy brick outhouse, except for the plastic pivot, and even that is pretty hefty compared to most.
