Anyone have any tips for cracking open a quicksilver 300 control lever? My trim switch failed, and so far so has every attempt at opening up the control unit. No obvious screws and I don't want to get too pry happy and break it.

To remove the handle, push the throttle only button in and go to WOT, then carefully pry out the button. Return to neutral gear then remove the center nut. You'll need a 11/16'' socket. If you don't go to WOT before removing the button you will brake the button and need a new one. Once the handle is you'll be able to how the backside of the handle comes apart better. Should be two screws. There's a shifter manual in the boatinfo links if needed. < PM sent.

Yeah: bondo is right, control handle trim switches very rarely fail, trim motor solanoids fail occasionally and trim LIMIT switches (on the gimbal ring) fail all the time. Before you start messing around with the handle, better make sure what the problem is. Symptoms?

Thanks, got the link! Yep, verified that the switch failed. Failed in an interesting way though. Hitting the up button works fine. When I hit down, it energizes both wires, so essentially turning on both solenoids and locking up the trim motor. (verified with a DMM) If I jumper the trim connector so only the down solenoid is connected, I can get the drive back down. If I do the same to the up solenoid, either trim button sends the drive up.

I have the same controller and what's interesting is that the wire inside the handle itself failed on mine. There is a break in the copper wire inside the plastic sheathing. The only thing I can figure is the repeated use of the controller has stretched and annealed the copper wire in such as way as to make it brittle and break in two. Took me quite a while to find the actual culprit!

I think you have a "3000", the last 0 is covered by the handle. Look up your part numbers here: https://www.mercruiserparts.com/selectDocs.asp?doc_nbr=889892
Yours looks like the classic. 99% of the time it is the limit switch, guess you are in the unlucky 1%

Yep, you are correct. Digging through the parts list, it is the Commnander 3000 panel, 88150A40 - A48. Won't be at the boat until next weekend, hopefully can tear into it then!

No Title

With the help of the posts above (thanks guys!) I got the controller cracked open. Not sure, but something doesn't seem right in this pic!

Wires were in incredibly bad shape, not sure how it worked at all last year, as this damage is years in the making.
