Hi, I just installed the Bennett M120 kit with the EIC5000. The helm switch has an orange wire (the power) and a purple wire which is the autoretract. Both of these I believe should be connected to switched circuits (on when the key is on and off when it is turned off). I have a normal fuse panel on my 1991 Trophy and a 2000 Mercury 150 outboard (5 pole igniton switch-push to choke). Can anyone tell me where to connect these two wires cuz I can't find a switched circuit on my fuse panel.

Thank you very much,

you never connect anything to the ignition switch that is for the engine only, put a switch in off your fuse block to power them.

Thanks, but that would defeat the purpose of the autoretract feature of the trim tabs. The idea is you turn off the ignition and the trim tabs will automatically retract before trailering the boat.

Ayuh,...

I believe the Orange wire goes to Fused Power(Constant)....
And,...
The Purple goes to Switched Igntion power......

Re: Trim tab wiring help

Thanks Bondo, because the EIC5000 is a combination rocker switch, tab position indicator (with LEDs), and has the autoretract feature, I believe both wires need to be connected to a switched ignition circuit or otherwise the LED's would be on constantly even when the boat is off. The trouble I am having is finding the switched ignition circuits.

Re: Trim tab wiring help

Look at the wires to the key switch, one will always be hot 12 volts and the other will only be Hot 12 volts when the key is On.

I do not have the auto retact feature and my power wire goes straight to the battery thru a fuse. No wires are connected to the ignition circuit. The power wire for the HPU (Hydraulic power unit) is a heavy wire and needs more current than the ingition switch is designed to carry.

The orange wire and the Purple wire only require 1.5 amp fuses so they are not the main power to the HPU that requires 20 amp fuse.

Yes both should be switch with the ingition switch if you want the auto retract feature. If you do not want auto retract leave the purple wire disconnected. I use my tabs a lot with the key off.

Find switched power at the back of the ingition switch or power to all your guages is switched.

If your going to use "switched power" off the ignition I think it would be better to wire in a simple relay and let it handle the current for the tabs and just let the switched power from the switch energize the relay.

Re: Trim tab wiring help

When I turn my ignition key (without starting the motor), the voltage meter and the fuel gauge come on, so I assume they are switched power, but how specifically would I connect the purple and wires to these gauges?

Thanks,

Mike
