My boat is a 23 foot Sea Ray cuddy....the guy who had it before me had trim tabs installed. When do you use these things (I'm new to boating)? I mean, should I use them to plane off or in ruff water or what? To me, I would think they cause more drag and would slow you down so I usually leave them up. Any thoughts?....

You can trim them down when taking off to help you plane quicker and as you get going raise them up. I would then try to leave them level with the hull to help the ride, kinda like having an extension. After that it would be a guessing game for me. That is why I like the idea of smart tabs. Haven't tried them, but thinking about it. :rolleyes:

You can reduce the speed that the hull will plane off at, the can level a hull in the water that is out of trim side to side, help the pounding of the boat in rough water, but it will take you a while to learn to use them properly, use some care and play with them intill you understand them--Bob

Check out the bennett web site.Great info on how tabs work,and how to use them. Also have simulator you can download and play. But take your time when learning to use them on the water. they can be a little scary the first couple of times. Use short bursts, and give the boat time to react before hitting them again.

Jim

The purpose of tabs is to correct a boats running attitude by having the ability to make small adjustments to correct the hulls position while underway, such as boat is listing due to load or wind and water conditions. Example would be boat is listing port (right side down) while underway , you can adjust the port tab down until boat levels out. Example 2 boat is travelling head on into wave's causing bow to rise and fall hard, both tabs down until boat smooths out and bow is cutting waves without heavy pounding, or boat is difficult to plane, again tabs down until boat begins to plane then tab up. The trick to tab operation is to first make any adjusments in small increments, tap the switch don't hold them in one position while underway you could place the boat in a dangerous position and lose control very fast. Take the time to play with the tabs at slower speeds and get a feel of there operation and how short adjustments affect your boat and think about what you want the boat to do before hitting the tab controls, the higher the boat speed the quicker the hull is going to react to any tab input from the helm. Just a final tip, if you find your caught in rough following seas ( this is a condition when high seas are coming from behind the boat faster than you can safely travel, be sure to keep tabs in the full up position) Once you get a feel for trim tabs you'll find then very useful, I myself did not have tabs on my Wellcraft until last year, I wish I had installed them years ago I found a world of differance on how well my boat now behave's and also noticed better fuel economy since I can keep the boat on plane at slower speeds without digging a large hole and plowing the bow.

Re: Trim Tabs 101....

I am a self professed tabaholic. Love them, love them, love them. Something not previously mentioned here is you can rearrange the weight in your boat to favor high speed (usually heavier toward stern) if that's your thing. Trim out until it starts to porpoise and then bring the porpoising under control by applying a little tab. Also, if you are running pretty fast and leap over some wakes, just before the bow starts to rise up to somewhat scary angles you can feel the tabs kinda keep everything under control. Yes, if all else stays the same, a little positive tab will slow you down. If the tabs let you run your drive a little further out and your bow a little further up, they can help increase speed. They will always help with planing speeds (lower if you want that) and time to plane (lower).

The side to side adjustment helps me avoid my wife's nasty looks when I ask her friend to switch sides . . .

Pretty subjective, but all of the comments above are accurate. I like to play with stuff, since you already have them I would just start playing!!!

Always remember the trim tab switches control the BOW attitude. Thats why the switch is labeled

........BOW {not tabs}
PORT.....STARBORD
..UP...........UP
DOWN .....DOWN

Dont worry about what the tabs are doing when you press the switch.
Pay attention to how the "BOW" reacts.
