I have a older "1968" 16 foot Starcraft and buy trimming the motor its a 40 HP Yamaha does very little as far as speed & planning changes, I did set the engine back 5 inchs on a CMC trim bracket, and I was wondering if trim tabs would make any difference. at full throtle if you play with the trim there is very little change if any at all.

Re: trim tabs

Help with what? Trim tabs and other add-ons are designed to help with specific problems. If the boat is stern heavy, has trouble getting on plane, porpoises, and won't stay on plane at slower speeds, yes -- trim tabs will probably help. They will not make the boat a speedster. Your boat is probably heavy and therefore a 40 HP is at the very lower end of the acceptable power level for it. You need power to get bow lift if that's what you are looking for. If the engine is not making full power adding gadgets will not compensate for that.

Re: trim tabs

not looking for more speed, she will do 25 to 30 MPH, all on witch way the current is moving, I was in ruff chop like in the NY HARBOR full open you get soaked, and at 1/2 speed she takes a very long time, with trim tabs would she allow me more speed & more control bow control bring the bow up & down as needed, my question is because the trim of the motor does very little change, how about one of those cavation finns, like the dolphin plate, on flat water she jumps on plane & flys, in in the tuff stuff I need a change, I know its a small light alummium boat, and I do have a 24 footer, but I had this boat a long time & really done want to depart with her any thought's, I have noticed if I place everyone in the back of the boat she does ride a lot better.

Re: trim tabs

Trim tabs and wedges are controls/tools to push the bow down. Shift weight aft to get your bow up. You already know that.

After you shift that weight to the back of the boat, if you then somtimes want to push the boat bow down without shifting that weight back forward, look at getting a "driver controlled at his fingertips" set of tabs.

In general, tabs can push the bow down. Engine trim can lift the bow. But, engine trim can not overcome a too heavy bow weight.
