I have a 86 4winns horizon 195, with a 140 mercruser. I have problems getting it to plain out, it dose have the trim tabs on the outer. The manufacture is Hydro foil int corp G1-Series 1 made in Crompond NY. I have had problems with cavitation also. I want to know if there is a certin way they should be mounted? Right now they are as far forward as they can be mounted. Should I move them aft more or leave them where they are mounted or get something more suited for the alpha 1 and my boat?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: trim tabs

not really clear in your description of what kind of trim tabs you have....are they mounted on the transom of the boat? how can you move them further back? I think we need a pic.

Re: trim tabs

Sounds like he has a drive mounted Hydrofoil, not trim tabs . . . ;)

The general consensus here is to junk those and buy hull mounted trim tabs, such as Bennett's if you want helm adjustable control or SmartTabs which work very well, are an easy install and are much less expensive. Both setups will transform your boat and solve the problem you describe. This assumes that the rest of the boat/engine/drive package is right in the first place. A 140 Merc pushing a 195 anything is a pretty tall order, so all must be right to get any satisfaction out of that combo.

Re: trim tabs

yup, exactly as QC advised above. get a set of real transom mounted trim tabs and ditch the hydrofoil. Also he also makes a good point about the assumption that all is running well. Trim tabs and hydrofoils will help a boat plane faster and at a lower speed but a 19' boat with 140 hp should plane without the need for tabs or hydrofoils....

need to make sure the engine is hitting max rpm, propped right and the boat is not waterlogged carrying around an extra 1000 lbs of water
