Trim/tilt died

I have a 1990 evinrude 115. I put the motor on a new (old) boat with a fan-tail. All worked well until one day I tilted the motor all the way up and forced it into the fan-tail overhang and as soon as I realized it was binding I let up on the button. It never worked again. I had to release the manual release screw to let the motor down and run and I have to lift the motor up by hand to lock it up since it lives in shallow water. It's Heavy!!
The solenoids both click when the buttons are pushed. The electric motor on the lift does not run at all. It seems to be an electrical problem but I can't find where. This trim motor was replaced 2 years ago and still looks pretty new. No ratty wires or other obvious defects.
The other thing is can the tilt motor be removed without taking the engine off the boat?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Doc.... The PTT elec motor is a dual polarity motor, meaning if it works in one direction, it'll work in the opposite direction.

Trace the wires from the PTT elec motor back towards the relay box, and disconnect those two wires at the connection you'll find. Run two small jumpers (+positive and -ground) to those two wires that lead to the elec motor (it doesn't matter which way you connect them). If the elec motor doesn't operate with voltage being thrown to it directly which is what you've just done, the elec motor is faulty.

If however, the elec motor does operate, then a faulty ground might exist somewhere, a break may exist in one of the wires that leads to the elec motor on the relay box side of the connector, something of that nature. Let us know what you find.

The PTT electric motor can be removed without removing the engine from the boat, but unfortunately the PTT assy must be removed from the engine in order to obtain access to the retaining screws.

Thanks. I found a corroded contact on one terminal on each relay. It works fine now. It was puzzling because I tried your test and the PTT motor worked with direct connection to the battery. Then voltage testing from the relays showed 12 volts when the switch was pushed, and even though the connectors were clean, when I put them together the lift still didn"t work. I finally checked the terminals on the relays.
All is well now. Thanks a lot!
