Mercury 40 hp serial number 0g048890 assuming year is 1990

I could not raise the motor. Assumed the oil level was low since I could hear the hydraulic pump run for both up and down position. I opened the drain plug and very little oil came out. forced some oil into the drain hole. I was able to run the pump in both up and down positions. I could run it up and then was able to lift motor up a little bit at a time. I did this in short (less than fifteen second) intervals. I was able to raise the motor up about half way like this. then the pump quit working. I waited a while and tried the pump again it worked for about two seconds then quit again. Also, I was able to kick on the starter before all this but, now I can't.

Now I can't get the starter to engage at all when I try the switch for the tilt lift I can hear a litlle noise conig out of the electrical box, up and down (not the hydraulic motor).

Is there a breaker involved in the hydraulic circuit that could cause loss of power to the hydraulic pump and the starter?

Re: Trim/Tilt/Electrical?

Hi Sammo; from what you say ,I would guess the unot is very low on oil, needs to be bled of air,and yes there is a thermol overload w/auto reset.I would beleive there is NO connection to the starter other then a low batt. condition, this would also draw more ampand cause the ol to trip.? do you have a manual?

Check the battery condition by load testing it at your local auto parts store. Then check ALL your connections from and including the battery and the ground on the engine block and starter terminal. Clean them all, but pay particular attention to the battery and engine ground points..
