Trim/tilt Gauge jumping?

O.K. Crew This is the issue, when I make a adjustment on the trim and tilt the gauge will jump both in and out of the water. the out drive is smoth as silk. I have put my and on it to feel if it is jumping, but it was smooth. Do I need to clean the sending unit? if so, with what and how? Four Winn 1996 Volvo SX

Not really sure on Volvo but my Merc was doing the same thing. A couple of weeks later the trim sender quit working all together. I replaced the sender and it now works like it should.
