Trim & Tilt hydraulic line sheared away from cylinder

I have an 85 Force 125 on a Bayliner 1900. One of the hydraulic lines was broken away from the starboard tilt piston when I bought it, and it spits hydraulic fluid straight into the lake instead of into the piston.

It looks like the female side of the screw threading (attached to the piston) has sheared off, leaving the hydraulic line with the male side intact but unattached. I cannot find a diagram of this item in my SELOC manual, so I am not sure what it originally looked like. Does anyone have a photo or a diagram of the piston with the female flange on it, and is this fixable without buying a new starboard piston or a whole new trim & tilt setup?

Also, any advice on how to remove those pistons? Didn't look like they were assembled with through bolts, and it is like a puzzle back there. Looked like the entire motor would have to be removed from the transom to get to them.

Thanks,
CC

I think that I now have the part required. Took a picture of it and showed it to a local boat shop, and they had a band that attaches around the trim piston that has the female end on it. They claim all I need to do is clip off the old band with the broken fitting and attach the new one. Let's hope they're right.

CC

Ok sounds the same sort of fitting on my johnston ,i got fooled also, what it is you have the band, behind that is a nut your male fitting screws into this nut and tightens up to cylinder. Only seal is a o ring very simple but it works.
Mine was leaking so i revs nut and changed o ring.
how it works is nut pushes against band to seal.

Thanks for the advice flips.

I'll let you know how it goes once I get a spare minute to tinker with it.

CC

OK, so last night was the night that I really tore into this thing, and Flips was right, it was a simple replacement band that went around the piston and it snugged up nicely.

What took 3 hours was the through-bolt that holds the pistons to the motor mount. That thing was awful to deal with. We hammered on it for hours until it finally pushed through to where we could free the piston. Totally smashed the starter threads, so now the nuts can't go back on, but hey, we now have TRIM & TILT. Gonna drill holes through both sides of that through-bolt and put Cotter Pins in it.

CC

Re: Trim & Tilt hydraulic line sheared away from cylinder

Sorry for the Bump, but
have just rebuilt my tilt and trim pump with a tiny o-ring to cure the dreaded leak-down.
Seemed to work a treat, first lift and the motor just sat there, solid as a rock.
BUT the fitting at the top of my tilt cylinder has stripped its thread so the first time i tried to lower the engine it blew - fluid everywhere.

So my question is, how easy is it to replace this fitting? It's the one seemingly held in place by a steel band, std thread at the top of the cylinder. (female part)

motor is 1989 85Hp with the 2 wire tilt 'n' trim pump.

Please bear in mind we don't have napa stores in Cyprus, but i could easily get hold of Johnson parts mentioned above.

it's also available in steel, but then you need to buy a handful and replace them faster than they can rust
http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/productdetails.asp?RecId=4187

if the hole in side of piston is badly corroded then you can use a standard drill bit to change the angle from AN to bubble. Then you would be wanting a bubble flare to inverted flare adapter. That's available in brass from weatherhead.

Thanks for that, will try to find something similar in one of the local boy-racer shops or perhaps a hydraulic specialists.
Looks easier to fit than having to remove the bolt through the top of the shock absorber and tilt cylinder (it moved 1mm in 1 hour)

Drew a blank with the local hydraulic shops but a marine mechanic found the exact part at the bottom of a drawer, in brass instead of aluminium.
Quicksilver Part number is F2A654983, Band assy - T/T cyl.
Fingers crossed for quality of remaining threads.

check the angle where it pushes against the cylinder. if it is different then it is probably a weatherhead bubble to inverted flare brake adapter. the angle for bubble flare is same as standard drill bit. if you can't get a seal because of different angle, then you may need to drill (carefully!) your cylinder sleeve. if your threads are stripped, then you can put a 3/8-24 jam nut inside the band.
