Well my trim/tilt motor went on my 86 150 johnson VRO. its the original I believe. I was wondering if this is a major repair, whats involved and how expensive this may be.I dont believe I can do this myself so i was concerned if this is another 1000 dollar job.As if Christmas didnt kill my wallet enough now this came along! :(

Are you sure its the motor and not wiring or relays?Did you connect power directly to the motor leads to confirm? If so you can get a T/T motor for way less that your feared amount.

Or, if the brushes are just wore out and the motor is still in good shape, you can replace the brush cap and lead assembly...'bout $90. OB is correct....the TNT job should break the bank.... :)

I picked up a motor and cylinder last year from a o.b. salvage yard for $150. They worked fine.

A replacement motor should be around 150 or so I believe. Yours should be a 2 wire motor so make sure to get the same thing.

Many times the hardest part is getting the bolts out. Go ahead and try to get the 3 bolts out of the port side stern bracket first just for kicks.

The relays click but there is no response at the motor, it has layers of rust around the casing. I tapped the motor in a manner similiar to what you would do to a car starter and a couple layers of rust peeled off.the problem is that the assembly sits in the water all the time, its a short shaft:(

OK, so if you have relays you have the 2 wire motor like it should. Try the 3 bolts in the port trim bracket (9/16" heads). Obviously it should be on a trailer or out of the water to be easy but try the bolts anyway. If they're corroded in you may have to resort to some pretty good heat.

Before replacing that trim motor, try to intrchange the relays, they sometimes get salt build up,etc. They are easy to replace and cheap.

Re: Trim/Tilt Job, difficulty?

If the case is completely rusted its time for a replacement motor even if the relay(s) are bad.

Re: Trim/Tilt Job, difficulty?

I had the same problem, upon tapping the motor, it leaned backwards, when I tried to straighten the rusty motor, it fell off in my hands. I got the side bolts out easy enough, but the thru bolt is not moving, not at all! Now, the bolt hasn't mushrummed yet, but both sides are completely stripped.

I got a heat gun and going to use that next, any advice? I am assuming I need to heat the Transum Mount as well as the Tilt/Trim where the bolt runs through it also?

I know someone has had this and found a trick or easier way to deal with it, please share! PLEASE!!! hahaha, I am about to the point of breaking out my Recip-Saw and trying to cute it out! Grrrrr

Lost -- dont worry about getting that thru-bolt out. All you need to do right now is get the nut off on the side that youre trying to remove the stern bracket on. That thru-bolt is probably corroded tight in the TNT assembly. You can address that later.

I recently replaced the TNT unit on my 150. Had to take recip saw and cut bolts off. Drilled out old bolts and replaced with new. Not that much trouble.

obj, where would you get that brush cap and lead assembly you speak of. I have an TNT that looks like it needs one of those; it would be for my 88 40hp johnson. thanks
