I have a 1984 Mercruiser Engine / Alpha 1
Trim & tilt has been almost working as it should , (except for slight oil leak)
Checking fluid levels often

Had a bird nest of un used ground wiring under engine and along stern wall not neat and not in electrical harness.
Decided it was time too correct., Finished and thought I did a good job until I attempted too raise lower unit
Hit switch NOTHING - SILENT ??????

Thinking too myself I must have removed a wire for trim & tilt motor ? but what, only Pos & Neg 10 gauge going too battery , and wiring from throttle

Put a 12 volt light tester on 100 amp fuse and 20 amp Power all around
I have Sea Ray wiring for my boat and no other grounding wire except the one from motor too battery is indicated ?

Silence indicated a wiring issue but what ?
Running a separate ground wire from ground of one of the selnoids too motor and IT WORKS ?

Previous owner must have had additional ground wire that I never noticed but not called for in Sea Ray wiring.?
Removed Mercruiser trim & tilt motor and noticed why I was leaking oil the O Ring on oil canister, was not seating even .
Added liquid gasket re- installed old gasket and ran that additional ground wire no oil leak and everything works ?

Speaking too a fellow boater he thinks the motor is on it's way out ??
Does any of this make sense ????
I am thinking something with ground wire & battery . While motor was out cleaned all connections and everything was clean even with leak
Battery is new. Wiring good. Will run a replacement wire too battery check out , if it does not correct and requires additional ground wire too work will
live with it but has any other boaters experienced this issue ?
Light bulb went off just now Could a selnoid be shot causing this ?

Bottom line is this - the trim motor and the solenoids need to be grounded. If adding a ground wire solved the issue then you are good to go. They changed the way the grounds are done over the years... but they are all grounded one way or another. Adding an extra ground wire (or two) will do no harm.

What does your trim motor look like? Does it have a plastic tank? A square metal tank? Or a round metal tank?

Here's a few wiring diagrams that may help:

Ayuh,.... The trim pump should have a dedicated ground right to the battery, equal in gage to the (+) wire,....
