trim/tilt on OMC Cobra

I have a 1990 Seaswirl Cordova with a 5.8L Cobra stern drive. The trim/tilt guage does not seem to work. It never moves from the full bow up position. I have the factory trim/ tilt in the remote control handle and also Bennett hydraulic trim tabs. How do I check to see if this is the sending unit or the guage, or maybe just the wiring.

It never moves from the full bow up position

You probably have a shorted wire......Shorting the sender wire will move the meter full up-scale.

I just purchased a Service Manual for a 1990 OMC Stern Drive on E-Bay for $52.00 plus shipping. Should be here in two days.
