Trim/Tilt problems

I just bought a 1974 19' Winner with an I/O Mercruiser 233. There is a trim/tilt switch under the shifter. There are 3 buttons. The bottom one is down, and there is 2 up buttons (one for trim, and one for tilt).

Currently, the only way to raise the outdrive is to push both up bottons simultaneously. Has anyone ever heard of this problem? It appears that I can not use the trim or tilt individually on the buttons.

Also, the trim/tilt gauge does not appear to be in sync with the outdrive.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Trim/Tilt problems

Doug, The system is not functioning properly, although most end up behaving like yours. The middle button is for triming the motor while underway. A trim limit switch prevents you from overtrimming. The middle and top buttons pushed together are for tilting the outdrive up for trailering or maintenance. The motor should not be run with the outdrive tilted beyond the trim limit switch.

The trim limit switch is located on the starboard outdrive pivot. This exposes it to water, and causes it to fail. When it fails, it does not complete the circuit which allows the middle button to direct the pump to trim up.

The trim gauge's sender is located on the port outdrive pivot. It too fails due to exposure to water.

Your choices are to replace the trim limit switch, bypass the trim limit switch, or always use the two buttons to trim the motor. If you do not replace the switch, you are responsible to assure that the motor does not trim too much. Normally the outdrive will ventilate before you exceed the trim limit, so it is not usually a problem.

To repair the trim gauge, it is likely you will need to replace the sender.

Re: Trim/Tilt problems

Thanks for asking that question. I have a '72 Winner that does the same thing. I just thought it was supposed to act that way so that the trim up couldn't be accidentally activated.
