trim & tilt question

I have a 1984 merc I-6 which the tilt is leaking. What is the best way to remove the Groove Pin from the arm of the Tilt cylinder? It looks as the head is larger than the shaft so i can't just punch it through. I can't get at it from the other side, can anyone offer a suggestion? (drill it out etc..?)

Once that is out I plan to swing the tilt cylinder down and remove the end cap and replace the O rings. Any suggestions or tips on that?

Thank you.

Re: trim & tilt question

Spray it with penetrating oil. See if you can tilt the motor up and use a punch to drive it our from the boat side.

If all else fails, drill off the head and then drive it thru.

Re: trim & tilt question

I can raise the motor, i just have to fill the system everytime i use it. BUT raising it does not change the position of the pin, it's fixed. I think the only other options besides drilling is removing the motor which i don't have the option of doing.

Anyone else??

How about any other tips for changing the seal?
