Trim & Tilt swap

I have a 1985 evinrude 115 with a broken trim motor. It is mounted to the side of the motor, and has one piston in the middle of the motor (I have not seen many of these). I would like to replace it with a different style, the one that the motor, piston, and hydraulics are all mounted in the middle of the motor. My motor looks like it has holes to mount that type of unit, but I won’t be sure until it’s too late. I found a tilt/trim unit that comes off a mid late 80's early 90's evinrude 175hp. Will this fit my motor? Or any other suggestions?

Re: Trim & Tilt swap

I had the same idea for an 85hp Evinrude (1970), but gave up on it. Part of the problem is finding a good unit (sounds like you may have solved that). I don't think anything other than the original configuration will work (at least work easily). But if you can eyeball a replacement unit, you can probably figure out if it's going to fit. It may make a lot more sense to replace the motor or have it rebuilt -- if the motor is the problem. You might be able to get a replacement at this website, or by checking out the ARCO website (Do a Yahoo or Google search.) I've done well with the ARCO products, and they are good to deal with.

Good luck.

The arco pump is $320 (pump only), and the prob I have with that is that it will never be as good as the other style unit.

Re: Trim & Tilt swap

The Arco stuff can be pretty expensive (At least that sounds like a chunk for a T&T motor), but I think they have a very good reputation. The shop that I go to for rebuilding starters said that Arco was top-of-the-line. (long story -- I ruined an Arco starter by getting it wet and rusting it up pretty good.)

I guess I would check with a reputable rebuild shop and see if they can fix your current motor. You can use the Arco price as a benchmark.
