I've got an older seahorse 135hp outboard. the motor has no ability to tilt unless you lift it by hand.
what are you supposed to do when your operating the boat?
is there a manual system availible or are you just supposed to bolt it into place at whatever angle is best for the boats performance?

I'm completely new to boats. I've looked online and there is a cmc unit availible locally for about 450.00 but for now I'd just like to know what I'm supposed to be doing to get her into the water and zipping around a lil bit.

boat is an 89 maxum 1700xr

thanks for any help

Re: trim/tilt systems

Just set the tilt pin for the best performance of the boat and run it, have fun.

am I setting this before or after I get into the water? when I'm driving around I have a 4x4 block under it holding it up. I'm guessing I should leave it in that position till I get into the water and then set it?

thanks for the reply.

When you get to the water put the pin in the bottom hole and run it. Then stop and move the pin out one hole at a time. When the bow of the boat wants to bounce , move the pin in one hole. This may be the best position to run it depending on the load of the boat.

With the boat out of the water, set the tilt pin so that the cavation plate is even with the bottom of the boat. Then tilt the engine up and lock it for transport. When you get the boat in the water, release the lock and let the engine down against the tilt lock. May have to adjust the tilt pin for best profermance.

Re: trim/tilt systems

Not trying to hijack this thread but I have a question on tilt/trim on older motors. Is there someway or something I can use to do this from inside the boat? I am a small guy and I cannot lift the motor from inside. Some places I launch at have "ditches" right before the ramp and would cause the motor to hit which is probably not a good idea. I don't want to get wet unless I just have to so I am looking for a way to manually tilt the motor from inside the boat before leaving the water and after I'm in the water...

Re: trim/tilt systems

I have a similar problem as you. I have 2 old Forces who's on their last legs and the trim/tilt mechanisms are totally corroded through. If you've noticed, the motor doesn't need the trim tilt feature to go forward but needs to be locked to go astern or else the motor will pop up when you put it in reverse and throttle up. The forward thrust will press the lower leg against the trim unit and cause the boat to go forward. So, unless you replace the trim/tilt unit you and I may have to rig a lever to tilt the motor up from the inside without getting wet. This will require some ingenuity and materials that will not be readily available to the average Joe. I would therefore advise you and me to either get used to getting wet or together we can design something that will accomplish our objective.

As said in the first post, you may want to check into CMC.com. They make a good system.
