hey all first post here,
my trim works but the motor runs a long time when you switch directions before it starts to move.
I'm thinking its low on fluid so I opened the top screw in the up position and oil came out lowered the unit and opened up the top scew and oil came out?
Not sure if the is the correct screw, there are only 2 that i can seem to find, the top one is on the face of the resevoir and the bottom screw is on the side accessed thru the transom bracket.
So if anyone could tell me the correct way to fill and bleed the system i would appreciate it very much.
its 87 johnson 90hp

Hey Squid!

Raise the motor all the way up. Your oil resvoir fill screw is the one on the right side of the resvoir. fill till the oil is runing back out the hole.
Then run it up and down not less than six times. recheck oil level, keep doing this until it will take no more oil.

Your pump should respond instantly, if it dosent if it dosent you may have a sticky pressure relief valve.

You have got to cycle it up and down several times to bleed the air traped in the system.

You shold also check and see if your manual release valve is screwd all the way in tight.

Its the screw on the bottom of resvoir faceing out toward you as you stand behind boat. That may also cause your motor to take time to start pumping oil, or not at all if its to lose.

Re: trim tilt trouble

If you're saying that you tilt the engine up to its extreme, or at some point fairly well up, then attampt to go down and it stays put until the trim rams pull in (observe the trim rams to see if this is the case), that is caused by a overly tight steering tube assy.

To correct, loosen one of those large nuts 1/2 turn, the with a 2x4 and a large hammer, force the steering swivel bracket sideways slightly, back and forth if possible. Grease the fittings on the front of the swivel bracket.... and that should cure the problem.

However, if on the other hand, the engine is indeed tilted to its extreme up position, than attempted to go down, and the TRIM Rams DO NOT move, but the PTT operates as it should after a small waiting period...... that is caused by two small ball bearing like check valves contained within the oil pump. Something one can live with, or if not.... replace the oil pump.
