trim/tilt trouble

Had problems with early eighties hydraulics on merc 90 inline.(tilt motor inside the boat)Motor became unreliable so mechanic replaced with exchange unit. Also replaced seals on both trim cylinders as the leaked. Problem now is that the engine will sink it's full travel in about five minutes. Can't see any leaks, all conections are good, not losing oil. If this was air in the system wouldn't it just be "spongy" as the air compresses. I can get the boat back to the mechanic but it's a fair tow. He says this system is self bleeding. My manual says not.Iv'e bled these systems before and i don't want to introdude air into the system if this is not the problem. Any advice.

Re: trim/tilt trouble

Stuart, If there are bleed screws next to where the hydraulic lines connect on the boatside of the trim cylinders, it is not self-bleeding. However, you are correct that it would only be spongy, if this was your problem. I have found that the engine "sinking" down was due to bad teflon piston seals within the trim cylinders. Also since the pressure line are connected together, a single bad piston seal will cause the motor to "sink". When you replaced the seals, I will assume they were the seals around the trim rods, versus the teflon piston seals. If you did replace the piston seals, you need to see if the valve body (under the pump body, with the pressure line connections) is working properly.
