I've got a '04 Starcraft Stardeck with the 5L Volvo Penta.
Took the boat out today and everything was fine. After trailering, my wife says she trimmed it all the way up and thought she heard it cut out like when it "tops out."
Well, backing into the driveway, I scraped the bottom of the sterndrive, heard it, stopped, and had to raise it all the way.
Then, while in the driveway to flush it (brackish water), I lowered it. When I tried to raise it, I heard it would not go up and I could hear a very faint sound like it was trying to work and wouldn't. I was really in trouble because I couldn't even back it into the garage likely without it hitting.
I tried a few mintes later and still nothing (except the little noise).
I tried 10 minutes later and still nothing (except the little noise).
Well, about 5-10 minutes later I tried it again and it went up! After I got it to go up, I tried a few more times moving it up and down just a little and it worked.
The fluid seems high enough. I'm wondering if maybe it's overheating??
Where do I go from here? Could it be a short in the switch/wiring?? Or is this an indication the motor/pump is going out?
I realized when this happened that this is one of the worst things that can happen to you because if it did not go up, I wouldn't have been able to put the boat in the garage and then I realized that if it happened on the water, I couldn't even trailer to boat! Is there any trick to force the sterndrive up? Could I disconnect the lines inside the boat (if I were stuck in the water) to relieve pressure and then manually for the sterndrive up?
Thanks!
Here's what I wrote down some time back about my engine and sterndrive:
