My trim unit does not raise or lower the 88 hp johnson. it has been sorta erratic over the last couple of years, sometimes it will go up and sometimes not. Early last year a friend said the relays(there are two) seemed to be corroded. So i replaced them and the unit worked fine for most of last season. But then it stopped working. I had noticed that the socket that one of the relays fit into had some black sticky stuff around the plug in. I have figured that it is the socket which has all the wires attached to it that is bad. I talked to a Nappa dealer in town that sells parts, relays, etc for Johnson and other engine brands but he was not able to get the socket. He told me before getting the new socket to clean the openings with contact cleaner and really clean the contacts and maybe it would work. Would anyone know if one bad socket would cause the trim from working up and down. And would cleaning make it better. Also, there are two sockets and where can i buy them if cleaning doesn't work. Thanks for the help.

Hi Stan

I don't know if cleaning the sockets will help or not, but it couldn't hurt to try it. I believe one can effect the other, so best to clean both...BRP website has exploded drawings and part numbers that should help if you need to replace the sockets/base...

BRP

Re: Trim unit 1988 Johnson

Well I tried cleaning the sockets that the relays go into but the trim motor never worked. So I decided to launch the boat anyway and let the engine down manually. When I got to the landing and turned the screw that takes the pressure off trim unit the engine would not go down to the run position. It is setting at about a 20 degree angle. Enough to run at about 5 mph but not any faster. I launched the boat so that I could at least idle around the lake until i could get it fixed. does anyone know why the engine would not go all the way down. I turned the screw which supposedly allows you to manually lift and lower the engine until the fluid started to ooze out and engine would still not go down. Last year when I put boat in the water after storage I had to lower the engine manually and it went to its run position with no problem. Thanks for any help possible.

Is the trim rod pulled all the way in and did you apply pressure to push it down? Is the trim pin in the lowest hole setting(Nearest the motor)?
