Trim unit leaking oil

If an outboard was laid on it side, would that cause the trim unit to leak oil?

My "New to me" outboard was leaking oil from the piston. I am wondering if this is a new to fix problem or a result of the motor being improperly stored?

The piston side of of the swivel bracket was covered in oil, so it would appear that the piston began or continued to leak while the more was in storage.

Any thoughts?

FYI - after filling the resevior the tilt/trim unit worked flawlessly.

Ginder,

I would work the unit to see if it operates correctly. A little oil can make a big mess.

Should you need to add oil, do so via the big slotted plug (on the TNT unit) and do so only with the unit all the way up.
