Trim will not always go up???

The boat is a 84 4-Winns Liberator with a 260 Mercruiser.

I had a problem when I was under power and planed out the trim would not always come up to trim the boat out. So after talking with my mechanic he said the trim pumps get aluminum shaving and crap in them and they can become to weak to lift under power. I replaced my pump with a tested used one. The new used one even sounds better, however I still have the problem. Its is not as often but now even going slow or out of gear it will not always trim. I am starting to think it is the switch.

The thing that stumps me is there are two different switches. One for trailer and the other for trim. When the problem is present neither one of the them will work. The trim down button will work though. I screw around with taking it in or out of gear or pushing the button and releasing it and then it will go. Any ideas?

Have you tried the electrical connections that come from the boat wiring ot the pump? I had a similar problem, what I found is there was a "plug connection" specifically for the tilt pump/motor that plug had some junk in it and was loose I unplugged it cleaned with contact cleaner and plugged it back together. I have had no ohter problems since. I don't know if this will help or not, This is just what I have found with my boat. 1987 VIP 2.3 OMC

Good luck!
Toby

Paul- the two trim switches are wired together inside the control lever...open up the lever and check the connections there..if all are tight and clean you'll need to follow the harness to the next set of connectors and check them...if all is well there- I'd be buying a trim switch

I would check the trim switches on the out drive. The insulation can wear off causeing a problem. Since the wires are stainless steel you can't repair them, nothing sticks on them for long. So relace ment is the key if they are worn. A machnic told me that the trim and the trailer switch are independent of each outher.

Sounds like bad relays to me. Unhook your cable going to your trim/tilt switches, do a continuity check to make sure they are closing the circuit, and or to make sure you don't have a circuit that should be open that is closed. If everything is okay there, could be a bad relay

Since your getting a clicking noise when you hit your switch, this is the relay kicking in, but it may not let the current pass through the relay itself. Suggest getting a manual and following the wiring diagram. If all electrical tests check out, it may be a backcheck valve problem (which I am not real familar with). Good Luck....SS

I have the same problem, I can lower the trim but it will not comeup. Th relay/solenoid is clicking, but when I put multimetter on the should be shorted side no power. I have to short the hot wire to the onther wire then it works.

Re: Trim will not always go up???

I am still stumped about the trim on my Liberator. Here is some more detail in case someone can help me.

On the trailer (on land) I can play with it almost all day and it works everytime. I only got it not to work twice. What I found was no clicking noise. You just hit the up button and nothing. I took the quicksilver control apart and checked each connection inside the conrtoller. There are 4 wires. Red, green, blue, and purple. The red one goes to the trailer button and then to the trim button. When I unplug the connector on the red wire neither the trailer or trim up will work but trim down still works. This is the same problem I have in the water.

I played with all the connection and the all appear to be tight and ok. Even wiggling everything can not cause the condition. I followed the wire back to the pump and eveything appears to be ok. The only connection before the pump is the round 3 prong the connects to the pump and 2 little connector before that go to the switch on the alpha outdrive. I can unplug those two connections that go to the outdrive and the trim up button will not work but the trailer button will bring the drive up. Remember when I am out in the water neither the trailer or the trim button will do a thing. So I really can't see how the outdrive switch or the wiring to it could be my problem.

This leads me to think it is either the physical switches in the controller or that red wire has a short in it somewhere that I could not see or make it happen on the trailer. I am stumped.
