Trim Works But Makes Clicking Noise

I have a 1996 Force 120HP motor and the trim has worked fine until yesterday. It started makes a pretty loud repeating clicking noise when trimming down. It works fine both up and down, but that loud repeating clicking is new. Any ideas what the problem is?

I had the same problem with mine. I replace the (2) relays under the cowling and now the problem is 100% gone. You might have only one of the two relay which are bad, but for $14.00 each, it's cheap insurance to replace both at the same time. You can test the old one and keep the good one for a spare on the boat.

Here's a link to where i bought mine. And they were original Mercury parts too. http://www.maxrules.com/

Good luck

Thanks for the reply. Anything else that is might be? I had been working on the engine the week before the clicking started. I had worked on the throttle and shift cables.

same relay with a $5.80 price tag. Why give mercury $8 for nothing? They surely don't deserve it.

back to your trim system. wire it directly to battery. if it still clicks and your battery is charged then you probably need motor rebuilt or replaced. If it works great when directly connected then there is a problem with your relay circuit.

Re: Trim Works But Makes Clicking Noise

Just a real quick stupid question: when I connect it directly to the battery, the trim will go up or down as soon as the connection is made, correct?

I'm assuming since I'll be bypassing the switch and solenoid, that is what will happen. Right?

1996 used both 2w and 3w trim motors.

If your trim motor has a black wire then it is 3w with blue = up, green = down, and black is common ground. If you hook up both green and blue at same time then you are telling motor to spin in both directions at once. So, never, ever, ever hook up both at same time on 3w motor.

If your trim motor only has blue and green then it is 2w. 2w does not have a ground. You flip the polarity of blu/grn motor leads to make motor spin in reverse.

That said, the answer to your question is yes. Hook motor up directly to battery and either motor works or is broken. No room for anything else except dead battery.

Thanks. It looks like it is the 3 wire system. I was thinking about doing something I saw in another post. They said to connect the battery cable that is on one of the large posts on the solenoid to the other large post of the solenoid, thus bypassing the solenoid. Would that be fine to do on this system? As long as I do one solenoid at a time.

you should not need any jumpering or bypassing. relays should be right next to starter and wires should have quick disconnect bullet. check to make sure that black wire is tied to ground. then take loose a bullet connector and touch it to positive. Of course, it might spark. So make sure not to have fumes or explosives nearby.

Ok that will work too. I think I was thinking the same thing except I was going to disconnect the positive and touch it to the blue or green wire connection. I think your way will be easier though.

Re: Trim Works But Makes Clicking Noise

Turns out it wasn't the relays. I called a local marine shop and they suggested it my be the upper or lower pivot pin and that I should try to lube it. I lubed the top, still had the problem. Lubed the bottom one and that fixed it.
