I searched around, but trying to search for 'outboard trim' returns tons of stuff, usually about power trim ;-).

I'm guessing that I want the outboard to be verticle when up on plane? Are there any good web resources for trimming hints, pictures and the like?

I think it's trimmed about right.. but I don't know for sure (I'm mostly a sailer ;-).

Just outta curiosity, is the procedure for trimming different with an O/B verses a stern drive? Just curious, I figured it'd be roughly the same..except of course your stern drive probably has power trim ;-)

Ideally, when trimmed properly, you want as much of the lower unit / midsection out of the water as possible and the cav plate parallel with the surface of the water.

c/6

Hooty

Does the trim affect that much? As my motor is mounted directly to the transom, I can't really adjust the height. I'm pretty sure the cav plate is right at the bottom of my hull (have to double check that).

Thanks.

Yes, the trim does have a big effect. That's why alot of boats have power trim, so you can adjust it while you're going.

Re: Trimming an outboard

I'm guessing that if the motor is riding a little low in the water, I should trim in a bit (which in theory lowers the front and would cause the motor to ride a bit higher)?

The stock mount has several positions for trim.. It's currently out around 10-15 degrees or so (at a guess). Hope to be out again this weekend, and I'll watch the engine while my wife brings up up to full throttle.

Your mounting brackets have four holes in them. This is to accommodate raising and lowering the engine on the transom. If necessary, you can use shims between the bottom of the clamp and top of the transom.

c/6

Hooty

Not on this one, it's only 25HP.. clamp on (with two 1/4" bolts for security. I can adjust the trim however....

Naw, the V6 is plenty. Monty tried a modified V8 on a boat just like that and it overpowered the hull and made it run on one sponson.
