Is it ok to operate at idle speed my drive if I'm trimmed out beyond the safe trim area? Say in shallow water or other situations which would cause me to trim my drive up. When I say beyond safe trim area I'm talking about almost near trailer position. (just enough to get water in the intake) How much stress is this on the u-joints?

Also, the u-joints are spinning even if the drive is in netural correct? So this would mean that I should have the drive as low as possible when I'm hooking ear muffs to the drive?

Your fine, I do it all the time and have not noticed any problems.

simple---That's the way I do it and I haven't noticed any difference after five years.

I read these I/O threads and check for sound and vibrations constantly since there are NO competent Yamaha techs nearby.

Keep them greased and you should be fine IMO.

What about on outboard motors? This issue doesn't matter as much correct?

I am pretty low on the marine knowledge scale but I don't think outboards have u-joints.

Simple...Yes the joints are turning in any gear. Keep the drive as low as possible. Even when flushing. But yes you can go thru shallow areas with the drive up. Just go thru at idle.

Outboards dont have u-joints.

I flush my engines each time I go out by laying on my swim platform and reaching down to the drives and sliding the muffs on to flush.I idle in the trailer position for 5 minutes each for the last 2 years with no problem at all.If I were operating the boat I would not go full trailer position but close and dont go over idle./Charlie

Re: trimming too far out/up bad on u-joints?

I travel through some relatively shallow water, going through a channel (1 mile each direction), to/from the lake. I have the trailer tilt bumped a couple of times past the trim shutoff. I always keep it between idle and 1000rpms for this. As soon as I'm in deeper water it is dropped into the normal position. If I tilted it up anywhere near the trailer postion, I'd be pushing more water in the air than moving forward. If it was that shallow, I'd probably have the oars out, and be more worried about hitting the bottom of the boat.

PS: U-joints are still tight when I pulled the drive for winter.
