Replacing the driveshaft seals on my '81 Johnnyrude 115. Manual calls for Triple guard grease on the seals. Don't have any and nowhere local to get it/ Only West Marine. They have the Qucksilver 2-4-C but it's an hour away. I have the West Marine brand red wheel bearing grease. Will that work just for these seals?

Hi, thanks. I read that earlier and it still wan't clear. Mainly said that it's OMCs anti corrosion grease and it's blue.

"3. OMC Triple-Guard Grease (is this white lithium gease?) = This is OMC's anti corrosive grease. Evinrude color is blue, Johnson is green. This is not the white lithium grease.

If Tri guard is white Lithium then I would just get white Lithium at the local parts house, been around for many year

Lou C makes his statement, but if your not in salt water I would guess your good

Heard many good things about Lucas, but personally I see it mostly as hype, a good synthetic is just as good or better

As always just my opinion

I have been dealing with this recently. I have used a generic red grease for years on trailer bearings and general outboard use and have had no problems. Recently I got some Lucas drab blue grease. I looked at some Wal-mart grease called Super Tech, which is their brand. The color of Lucas and Super Tech was exactly the same. You be the judge. I believe like gasoline a lot of this stuff is jobbed by major companies and just repackages with different decals.

Gee, the grease is only to lubricate the seals to install them and to install the driveshaft. Most any type will work.

Obviously BRP wants to sell you a tube of their stuff....

I use the Supertech Marine wheel bearing grease for everything for the boats, cars, bicycles...seals, bolt heads, even wheel bearings.

Big difference between “wheel bearing” and Triple Guard grease.

The viscosity and tackiness of the two greases are very different. The washout resistance of Triple Guard is noticeably superior as well. Only grease I use on my prop shaft, steering ram, pivot bracket, trim brackets, etc.

Will any old grease work on the seal in question? Don’t know, but “wheel bearing” grease and Triple Guard are very different greases.

The grease between the seals keeps water out.----Takes up space that MIGHT fill with water.----Then when winter comes no damage occurs.----I would not use any type grease for wheel bearings.-----It has to be labelled as suitable for wheel bearing applications.----Trouble with a boat trailer on the interstate can be dangerous / expensive.

Molykote 111 is designed specifically for that type of application. It's very stiff and water resistant.

Came across a tube of grease with a "boatie" sounding name I can't remember but made since the 1930's. Guess what? Same exact color as Lucas and Super Tech.
