I live in Ontario Canada and I'm curious what the rules are regarding a truck towing a camper towing a boat (or another trailer) not just here in Ontario but anywhere people are from. I've seen it a number times, and it doesn't strike me as all that safe.

Re: Triple Threat

I think that would be more of a common sense thing.

Any idiot that does that doesn't deserve to have all three in my opinion. :) Common sense is in short supply these days. Sorry, but that just hit a nerve after seeing some idiot with his 3 yr/ old on the back of his Harley today going 55 mph down the freeway.

Properly equipped and the proper operator license in hand it is no more dangerous than an operator with a lesser license towing a single trailer that is way over the weight limit for the tow vehicle. Key factors are that most states require a license endorsement, both trailers need brakes, and the middle trailer needs to have a frame and hitch capable of handling the weight of the second trailer and finally, the tow vehicle needs to be up to the task.

Re: Triple Threat

I've seen it done with a 1 ton pickup, a 5th wheel trailer and a boat on a trailer. He just dropped the boat off at the ramp, placed the 5th wheel on the site, then returned to launch the boat.

It's quite safe and legal when capacities and limits are observed.

Here in Ontario it's mandatory to obtain a truck driver's license to do it.
(DOT considers it a "train")

Re: Triple Threat

I have a neighbor that does it all the time.
Has 5th wheel and he pulls his pontoon with him when he goes camping.
He says no problems.
I would venture it safe, but was OTR 22 years.
That makes a difference, IMO.

Check out the current parallel thread "piggyback towing."

Don't know about Canadian provinces, but it's illegal in many US states.

In Michigan, it's legal *only* if the middle trailer is a fifth-wheeler; I believe special license endorsements are required.

IMHO, this is not a smart thingto do at all.

Re: Triple Threat

The 5th wheel rule is to prevent 2 trailers being pulled through a 2-5/16" ball/coupler on the tow vehicle.
A 5th wheel connection is FAR stronger.
